The ProposalMax's Perspective:
Floris had been in New York for months, and while I hadn't seen her, we maintained contact through the wonders of the internet as well as talking on the phone every night. We finally saw each other at Thanksgiving. It was then that I decided I was going to ask her to marry me. After so long apart, we felt so natural together, and it was so hard to let her go back to New York, I never wanted to do that again. So come Christmas break, I began the process. The first thing I did was buy the ring. I was at Kay Jeweler's, and I had picked out the ring I wanted, but when I went to pay for it, the credit limit on my debit card was too low. So I called my bank, and I raised the limit to about $10 over the price of the ring. And it worked, my card ran, but it was three dollars short. I called my bank again, and we got it all straightened out. The next step was asking her parents' permission. I went over one night, but her mom wasn't home yet, so her dad and I made small talk until she got home. They gave me their blessing. I spent the next few nights waiting for Floris to get home from New York writing love notes and putting together a playlist (to the right). The morning after she got home, I set up the love notes in a long trail that led to my room and set my computer to play the Marry me Floris Mix and invited her over. Little did she know when she arrived that I was hiding in the living room, and all that was in my bedroom was a plate of cookies I had promised weeks earlier. I listened to her walk through the house, picking up the love notes, my heart pounding. When I heard her go into my room, I got down on one knee and waited for her to come out. She did. She said yes. It was wonderful. Floris's Perspective: As Max said in his bit, I was studying in New York for a semester. I had an absolutely wonderful time there with completely wonderful people. I didn't exactly want to leave New York but I was excited to get back to some of my favorite people in Iowa (Max among them). Friday, I took the train from New York to Chicago, an overnight ride of about twelve hours (if the train was on time which it usually wasn't). Being very excited to see each other, Max and I were already making weekend plans for when I got back. It was almost Christmas so I wanted do some shopping that Sunday. Max was all for this, but he was oddly adamant that I get dropped off or find some way over to his house that didn't involve him picking me up since apparently he wouldn't be able to use a car for a while. He was very adamant about this one thing. I thought this was a little strange, but I've known Max to be oddly adamant about curious and seemingly minimal things from time to time so I just went with it. Saturday, the train got into Chicago relatively close to on time. Max's mom and my friend, Amanda Roberts, were at the train station to pick me up (Max wanted to be there but he got a stomach flu the night before). We rolled into Marion late that night. I was pretty tired from all the travel, so that night Amanda, Max, and I hung out for just a while, catching up. The next day, I called Max up to finalize our Christmas shopping plans and again, he asked me to find a way over to his house. Borrowing the family car for the day, I drove over to his house and as I pulled into the driveway, I thought it was very strange that the truck he usually borrows was sitting nicely in the street (the truck that someone was allegedly using at that very moment). I walked up to the door and read a sign telling me to come inside and follow the trail of notes, and that is about when I knew without a doubt Max was proposing. I said yes. |
